So, one of my New Years resolutions this year was to do yoga. I have never really done Yoga before, never even attempted it. Yet, I really wanted to try this year. Partly because i’ve heard that yoga makes you feel more flexible and more energized, both things I really want to feel this year.
However, I don’t feel ready to attend a class at gym because I literally know nothing about it. Also I really don’t think I would feel confident surround by a class of people, all at different level & paces. Not for me. To start with, I’ve decided to take it really slow and practice in the comfort of my own home following a beginners programme available on Amazon Prime. Theres actually quite a good selection of video and at different levels with different moves.
So, determined to keep on a good streak with my New years Resolutions I dragged myself out of bed at 6am Sunday morning and stumbled into the living room. I poured myself a green tea (I thought it would help) and rolled out the yoga mar. Its a plus that we already have one as my boyfriend start doing yoga last year!
I decided to go easy on myself and start with a 30 minute beginners workout and oh my goodness yoga is no joke. I really didn’t understand how hard it is and also how unflexible I am. In the beginners class I learn to do the childs pose first of all, apparently its considered a humble pose as its in the shape of a bow, its a good to start with as it stretches your back and a perfect one to focus on.
This then went into the Downward dog pose. This one felt intense, you’re supposed to flatten your heels in order to stretch your ham strings. To begin with it felt reallllly uncomfortable as its a standing postion, so I will slightly wobbly. However it does build up your core strength which I could feel! I felt my back click while holding this pose – which actually felt so good. So i’m looking forward to continuing practising this pose, so hopefully in maybe a years time I can hold this pose for much, much longer.
The Last pose, with exercise had to offer was the triangle pose. This one also focuses on strengthening the core and extending the body. My arms and legs were stretching so much that this became the easiest wake up call ever. The twisting was fairly intense but I loved the challenge on focusing with the pose in order to achieve the best possible results.
So there you have it! my first attempt at yoga ever! The above ‘yoga with adriene’ videos were really helpful when describing what i was doing. So i thought they would be worth popping in! I’ve decided I’m going to attempt yoga twice a week for six months and then revaluate how my body is feeling. Of course yoga is not the be all and end all for feeling good so I’ll attempting other lifestyle hacks along the way.
One will be to practise a week of 5am starts, in order to change my morning routine involving my work out and actual work. I’ll let you know how I got on with that very soon!
